Hi Everyone! I had such a great time last week and I already miss everyone tons! I have ordered a bunch of stuff that I need to do all the new things I learned. Also, found several places that sell the firing racks...(although they're made for bead makers) Here are the links:
http://store.allstainedglass.com/hollyroller.html
http://www.crloo.com/Products/Hand_Tools___Supplies/Hand_Tools_3/hand_tools_3.html
http://www.globalbeads.com/toolscording/glstools.html
http://www.arrowsprings.com/html/shaping_tools.html (cheapest at $5.00)
I am still going to explore buying some metal to make custom sized firing racks etc.
I finished a new piece on Saturday when I got home (although I cheated, the wirework was already done before I left for Dallas. I'll post it here for you to see. I have two others with wirework finished, also done before I left, and I want to hurry and get them done because now I know how lousy the basecoats are and I want to practice my new skills. Today at the store I bought..Ivory soap...non-sudsy ammonia...toilet paper, paper towels and of course kitty litter! Love to all of you...Julie

I was sitting here working on a supply page and suddenly you were there! I am so happy to have had you join us in Dallas. I talked to Michele Raney yesterday about the idea of teaching a "Goldsmithing for setting cloisonne" class. I think she might go for it. I will try to get us some racks right away. Thank you for finding those. Your new piece is lovely!

Hi Merry-Lee,
It would be so fabulous if Michele would do it! I'll be the first to sign up. I ordered some fine silver bezel yesterday and some 28 guage for backing as well. I figured that even though soldering silver and gold are two different animals, it couldn't hurt to get some skills with silver as well. Thank you so much for the inspirational workshop. As I go to work today fixing teeth I will be cherishing the memories of last week....and itching to get back in the kiln. Love to everyone...Julie

Wow....you've got it! When I've got 5 new pieces done with the new techniques you taught me..that I think are good, I'll get in touch and set it up....with this kind of incentive it won't take me long! I went by my local "plastics" store yesterday to pick up some small acrylic pieces for making matrix dies. The guy ended up giving me a 2" x 4' piece for free! So, I'll make some interesting new shapes that will be fun. I am gathering up our broken dental instruments to send to Dallas, let me know if you need any. There will be better and better instruments we can use because they are developing new ones for micro-dentistry that are very very small. I talked with my patients today about you and my trip and I was wearing "dolphin fun"....many, many compliments! My Margaret Seeler book arrived today and I am off to open it up. I made my list on all the things i need to buy. I tried calling Coral today to order my enamels but she is out of town until Feb. 7. So, i'm ordering everything else.
A question, do we need to get a ultrasonic cleaner for the amnonia or can we just wash it in the amnomia or let it soak in it for awhile?
Hope everyone is doing well. Most of you i will see.
Kim is trying to plan a enameling workshop for us. If that happens I hope to see alot of you there.
Love you all,

Hi Leslee,
For what we did in class, you should be able to do it with Amonia without the Ultra Sonic. When you start making settings the Ultra Sonic will come in handy, so delay that purchase if you wish.
I like the #36 Black because it is slightly purple, the Japanese one is almost neutral but perhaps a little green. Also the Bovan Black is a finer grind and I find that helpful in some applications. I am often trying to fill a tiny area.

Subject Cutting acrylic and size of rubber

Date Fri Feb 4 2005 12:49

Author Leslee Feiwus (LesleeFeiwus@yahoo.com)

Julie told me that she was melting her acrylic as she was sawing it. You told me to use the wax saw blades is that right and do we do that wet. I read the label on the acrylic that it is highly flamable and combustable under heat. Also, can we use regular files to smooth out the patterns or use the diamond drums under water to get a smooth finish?

Also, Kim found a source for the rubber for the bonny doon. It is 85 whatever the letters are after it. Is this size ok or does it have to be 60?

I'm having an awful time finding the urethane. The best so far is a piece that's 6" x 20" for $60. No one carries it in stock except in sheets of 4'x10' at the 85 durameter/ half inch. The 60 durameter is a special pour. Apparently this stuff is kept liquid and usually shaped in molds.

Dear Leslee, what has been working well for me in getting the outlines smooth since I am not a good saw-er, is a sandpaper cylinder on the foredom flex shaft(run slowly) and also some white and pink stones that I got from the dental office. The sawing seems to go better if I stop and let the acrylic cool down periodically. Every once in a while the acrylic gets too hot and sticks to the blade (I am using monotooth blades per Bonny Doon's recommendations) Also, I the acrylic I bought from Bonny Doon did not have the melting problem I have had with the free stuff from the plastics store, so maybe it is a different grade. Still...it is working, I just have to go a little slower. Have fun with it and let us see! Love you, Julie

Hi all you alley cats! After I left you, I spent a few more days with my daughter, then drove on to Marshall, TExas to visit my 91yr old aunt and her 3 daughters who came in from all directions. It felt like a pow-wow. I continued coughing (my apologies) and got wetter and wetter, and by the time I got home last Monday, knew that I was in for a hectic week. It really settled in my chest and I had a low grade fever and spent a few days in bed. I'm still coughing a little, but staying inside.
I confirmed with Thompson Enamels today, that they do handle s o m e Blythe enamels, but you must call to find out which ones.
I also checked out one of Julie's websites and found protective eye glasses at www.crloo.com (etc.)
I also looked for some diamond hand pads and found a website that I think is the cheapest I've seen. It is at http://www.atoolforyou.com/one/mwi_handheld_polishing_pads.
html They have 8 different grits. I use them for taking the enamel down and cleaning up the sides. They're easy and fast, especially good if you don't have lapidary wheels.
I sent my class notes to MerryLee for her perusal before I put my paw in the Litter Box and not hit clean litter.
I have a few more pictures in my camera before I get them developed, but I hope to post some neat pictures of our pieces and of us all together soon.

Hi guys,
Yep, you said it! I too am loath to have acids around. The acid that etches glass (Is it Hydrocloric or Hydroflouric?) is very unstable and you can burn your lungs with the fumes (Someone told me this years ago and I believed them but maybe someone knows for sure), I try not to get anywhere near the stuff.
I also like the knife edge I get when I sand them. I use my big lapidary unit. be careful though... I would not use my little diamond drums as they are too expensive to wear out on this job. I have also heard that you can heat the trivits up then drop them into a big bucket of water and the glass pops off.

Date Fri Feb 25 2005 12:09

Yes, the acid that is used to etch with is highly toxic and will burn your lungs and your whole respirtory track. You need to wear a respirator when using these acids and do it outside or with plenty of ventilation. These acids are extremely dangerous to be near and use. We were discussing this with my fabrication teacher. I would stay away from these acids at all costs. They are very hard to come by too. They put a higher rate on them because they are so highly toxic and unstable. The ones you can get are watered down. The pure acid only universaties can get or i guess huge businesses.

     Subject what about fines

Date Wed Mar 9 2005 17:20

Author Leslee (LesleeFeiwus@yahoo.com)

You can use the fines for enamel paint by sifting it thru 325 mesh screen. This i got from Coral from one of her handouts. She even said since you are using the flux for basecoat and using it dry you could sift it thru a 200 mesh screen and the fines will fall out which you could save for enamel paint and the flux that stays in the strainer is what you use for your base coat so that you don't have to wash something that you then have to dry to sift on. Coral stated that she uses this technique whenever she uses dry enamels and washes whatever she wet packs. I'm going to try it. It sounds alot easier than washing something and then having to dry it to use dry. Leslee

Subject Hi from St.John!

Hi everyone!
Here I am in St. John in the US Virgin Islands visiting with the Jewelry Store that has carried my work for ages, R&I Patton. It was so much fun to meet the staff. Leslee, I have your Florida Panther with me and they wanted it but I of course said they couldn't have this exact one... So they will wait until I get a chance to make one. We have been diving, Heather got certified and I have a new dive buddy! We have seen lots of really wonderful things and I highly reccommend this island... Perhaps we should have our next class here!

Congratulations to Heather! In spite of being a Pisces, I never was brave enough to try scuba! I remember a trip to the Carribean when I was about 13...it's a magical place. Have a wonderful time, it's good to hear from you....& I'm jealous..off to work. Love, Julie

Subject Medicine bottle containers for enamels

Date Fri Apr 8 2005 16:25

Author Joanne (jio.studio@gmail.com)

Greetings everyone!

Is anyone interested in new medicine bottles that hold 2oz of enamels? They are orange. They are UV protected and air tight seal.
I had to buy a case of the bottles (300) and a separate case of the caps (600). So now I've got an extra 200 bottles and 500 caps. Let me know. Just need you to pay for the shipping box and postage.

         Subject size of the caps

Author Joanne (jio.studio@gmail.com)

The caps fit a 13 or 16 dram vial. Check the bottom of the vial, there's a small marking: 13T, 13D, 16T, or 16D. They are the child-resistant type. They do have WallMart logo on them.

                 Subject Ask Walmart Pharmacy

Date Mon Apr 18 2005 09:11

Author Joanne (jio.studio@gmail.com)

The pharmacy would have just given me bottles if it was just a handful. I checked with all the pharmacies around. They'd all do the same.
So just take the bottle down and ask they for a couple of caps.
If they don't do it in CA, let me know what size you need. I'll ask mine.
