Hi Kim,
You will be happy to know that the way that I achieve those colors is really quite easy.
Once my wires are fired in, I do several layers of colors, No opal yet. I work very thin and shade delicately in rather light colors. I then cover those colors with layers of Opalescent white. I use the Japanese, S320 or NG 302. NG302 is slightly more transparent, S320 is creamier and will diffuse the colors a little more. Sometimes I mix my Opal with S302 Flux. You will have to experiment with these to get the perfect combination for your work. You would think that the opal would cover up the colors but you will be surprised at the intensity coming through. Not all Opals are equal! What brand are you using?
The gold color you see is partially a reflection of the 24K gold wire through the enamel. I am looking forward to meeting you at the workshop in April.
Merry-Lee
