Enameling is the fusing of glass to metal. A transparent shiny glass contains no crystals, however if a glass is cooled slowly crystals begin to form and the resulting glass is clouded with crystals. This is referred to as devitrification. Clouding can be avoided by cooling the firing as quickly as possible after it reaches the mature temperature. Glass formulas vary greatly and crystals of different silicates grow at different temperatures during cooling. Crystallization can occur down to the freezing point of glass (the solid state). To make crystal clear glass I crack open the kiln door right after I reach temperature and shut off the kiln. A rapid descent to approximately 1292 F ensues. At this temperature I close the door and avoid thermal shock. Some experimenting with various cooling rates and door closing temperatures should solve the clouding problem.
